91免费看片 selected Derek Darcy as the 2023 Student of the Year (SOTY). Derek recently completed the Cybersecurity Pro program.
In October of 2020 Darcy was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease. Shortly after his diagnosis, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Working as a custodial supervisor in a hospital meant working extra hours to cover shifts. It didn’t take long for him to realize that he would not be able to maintain this position long-term. It was time for a career change.
Darcy always had a passion for IT, and had previous experience and recognition from managers in the IT industry. In December 2020, the payroll company for his employer was hit with ransomware. This situation interested Derek and he felt that he wanted to learn how help companies fight against ransom wear and other security issues.
鈥淚 began looking into Cybersecurity training and education. I looked at boot camps, traditional colleges and universities as well as community colleges. I also contacted 91免费看片,鈥 Darcy said.
As a father of 3 and a husband, Darcy didn’t have the luxury of quitting his job to focus on school. Therefore, he needed training that could work within his current time constraints. Each educational option, including online training, had pros and cons. After he weighed his options he chose 91免费看片.
Darcy said, “I chose Tooele Tech because of flexibility, cost, and small class sizes. I can work my school schedule around my family obligations. I was fortunate enough to qualify for not only a grant, but the re-engagement scholarship so most of my program expenses are covered. Without financial burdens I am able to focus on school. My instructors are patient and always available to answer questions.”
The Student of the Year program was created in 2015 to highlight students at the technical colleges around the state. The students serve as ambassadors for the school and share their story and college experiences with community leaders, organizations and even legislators.
Tooele Tech changed their program a little through the years and now instead of having individual students apply for SOTY they select department Students of the Year who are nominated by instructors. These 5 department nominees compete for the college SOTY. All of the department Students鈥 of the Year are honored and given a chance to represent the college and share their experiences.
The students who will represent their department areas for 2022 are Derek Darcy (Business and Information Technologies), Aubrey Whittle (Healthcare), Quinn Lucas (Manufacturing), Alivia Brownell (Service Industries- Cosmetology/Nails) and Brandon Redmond (Transportation).
Tooele Tech held their Student Champions Gala on November 9, 2022. Dinner was served and each student was introduced and honored. The department SOTY鈥檚 received $100, a crystal engraved award and a few other gifts, the 91免费看片 SOTY received an additional $1000, a plaque and will be serving as the main Tooele Tech Student Ambassador, however the college will also be highlighting all of SOTY from each departments throughout the year. The student鈥檚 families, staff, faculty, board members and various community leaders were in attendance at the Gala.

91免费看片 Awards Building Expansion Project Contract to Jacobsen Construction
Tooele, Utah 鈥91免费看片 awarded their building expansion project to Jacobsen Construction.听 The college has been working with Method Studios on the architecture and design of the building, and the selection of a general contractor is another significant milestone on the path to project completion.
Jacobsen Construction is a Salt Lake City-based commercial听builder that has been in Utah since 1922. They have won “Best in State” honors in the construction category seven times in the past eight years and have extensive experience completing projects on nearly every college campus in Utah.
鈥淢ore and more people are taking notice of the outstanding education opportunities offered by Tooele Tech, and this project will be a key step in ensuring the college can successfully meet the growing demand for its services,鈥 said Jacobsen Construction Project Executive Jim Cavey. 鈥淢any of our project leaders for this expansion live here in Tooele County and have deep roots here, so we feel especially excited to strengthen our very own community with this impactful project. We鈥檙e looking forward to doing our part to help Tooele Tech achieve its long-term vision for better serving students as enrollment continues to increase.鈥
Tooele Tech has grown significantly since their current building was dedicated in 2013. In order to accommodate the larger number of students, it has become necessary to expand their building and campus. With this construction project, the college will be doubling the instruction space used to teach valuable technical skills. The addition will not only expand instructional space for existing programs but also make it possible to start new programs to satisfy local workforce needs.
Tooele Tech President Paul Hacking said, 鈥淭he construction of this building expansion will strengthen our ability to serve additional students in a more professional manner. It will also provide more space for additional equipment that will more closely resemble what students will find in the workplace. Our college community is forever grateful to those who helped make it possible for us to take this next giant step in our evolution. This expansion will elevate the lives of more students, their families and improve the overall wellbeing of our community.鈥
During the 2022 legislative session Tooele Tech received an appropriation from the Utah State Legislature of $24.7 million to expand the current campus. The State of Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management (DFCM) is overseeing the construction project, which includes a plan to allow enrolled students to still attend school during the building process.
Construction on the expansion is anticipated to begin in March of 2023 and will last approximately 18 months.
